STU SHIBARO

THE BOTTOM LINE

Originally from the Washington, DC area and currently living in picturesque Colorado, I’m primarily drawn to shooting natural landscapes and man-made builtscapes. Fortunately, I have been blessed with a patient family that has tolerated my carving time from our travels to capture many of the images on this site. When not shooting landscapes, I practice my hand at sports photography, documenting my daughter’s figure skating endeavors. I’m also interested in casual portraiture and hope to expand my capabilities in that arena going forward.

THE REST OF THE STORY

I first developed an interest in photography while a student at the University of Virginia, experimenting with the Nikon FG my parents gave me for my birthday.  But with a career in the Air Force and other endeavors came new demands and less time to indulge the interest.

Fast-forward 25 years to the arrival of my daughter, when I acquired my first DSLR, a Nikon D50.  While I enjoyed that camera, I never ventured from the safety (or tyranny) of the ‘Auto’ setting until I learned how to use my camera’s controls during a memorable photo workshop in Yosemite.  Suddenly I was no longer at the mercy of the camera; I could finally create more intentional images rather than merely taking snapshots and hoping for the best.  A new world had opened.

From that fresh start in 2012 to the present, I have marveled at how combining a little technical knowledge with light and composition (and a little luck) can yield images that step beyond snapshots and begin to convey a tale.  I continue striving to be a better image-maker and storyteller, which I suspect will be a never-ending quest. And as I have improved my capabilities, I have also upgraded my gear, currently shooting with a Nikon mirrorless camera and a few very capable lenses.

When I’m not using my camera, I am busy as a husband, father, and professional public servant.  I live with my family along Colorado’s Front Range near Denver, where the short-grass prairie and the Rocky Mountains meet under a boundless sky — a region where the photographic opportunities are also nearly boundless.
